Hamas and Hezbollah: Imitation Is The Sincerest Form of Terrorism

Hamas continues to emulate their terrorist comrades in Hezbollah
  • Hezbollah kidnaps Israeli soldiers--Hamas kidnaps Gilad Shalit.
  • Hezbollah builds extensive underground bunkers--Hamas builds underground installations in Gaza.
  • Hezbollah bombs Israel during its war--Hamas figures it can bomb Israel forever.
And now Haaretz reports that Hamas wants to employ the 'Hezbollah model' in Gaza:

A Hamas source has said the model being planned for the new Palestinian unity government is that of Hezbollah in Lebanon, in which the organization is a government party that has shed responsibility for routine matters but maintains an independent military.

“If anyone expects Hamas to hand over its missile network to the PA, he’s making a big mistake,” the Hamas source said. “Hamas wants to avoid ministerial responsibility for civilian matters, but it wants to maintain its power as a popular-resistance group.”

Hey, wait a minute --
Did he say popular resistance group?

We've already seen reports this year that Hamas sinks in polls after cutting salaries to public servants and that Islamic Jihad gains support in Gaza as Hamas declines

Is imitating Hezbollah really going to enhance Hamas' reputation and bring them back into favor?

Just consider the Lebanese disapproval of Hezbollah's support in Syria and the resultant retaliations from the Syrian insurgents.

Is it likely that concentrating on terrorism -- with the resultant Israeli retaliation -- while leaving the governing to the Abbas regime going to bring renewed approval for Hamas from Gazans?

One has to wonder if Hamas has really thought this through.
